Dell receives major design for recycling award

United StatesComputer giant Dell has won the ISRI 2014 Design for Recycling Award for two of its tablets and a laptop model in recognition of their emphasis on recycling during every lifecycle phase.
The accolade is claimed to be ISRI's 'highest' award given annually to the 'most outstanding contribution to products designed with recycling in mind'. It recognises 'proactive steps made by manufacturers', adds the recycling body.
'There were many strong contenders for this year's award, but Dell's strong commitment to sustainability, both through its own practices and for those who use its products, rose above the crowd,' comments ISRI president Robin Wiener. 'As more and more manufacturers place a strong emphasis on recycling at the beginning of the design phase, we look forward to many more qualified applicants for this award in the future.'
The Dell Latitude 10 and XPS 10 tablets as well as the company's Latitude E7240 laptop were lauded for: modularity in design; clear labelling of parts for identification; minimal use of glues/adhesives; and convenient disassembly guides.
Dell products are claimed to contain significant quantities of recycled materials, including nearly 3.6 million tonnes of recycled plastic in its desktops and monitors.
